Mammootty is an Indian actor, producer and distributor who acts mainly in Malayalam films and also in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and English films. In a career spanning five decades, has appeared in over 400 films including cameo appearances .[1]

Mammootty debuted through the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal

 which was directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan. In the film, he acted as a Junior Artist. His next film was the K. Narayanan directorial Kalachakram which was released in the year 1973. In this film also, Mammootty played a minor role. His first film in a lead role was in Devalokam which was never released. He played one of the lead roles in the K. G. George directed Drama filmMela. This film is credited as the third film of Mammootty. He also acted in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal[a] In the next year, he acted in Ahimsa. For this film, he won the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor. In the next year he acted in the film Padayottam. In this film, he acted as the Antagonist. Padayottam was the first 70 mm film in malayalam. He played the role of a police officer in Yavanika. In 1984, he acted in the I. V. Sasi directorial Athirathram, in which he played Tharadas, a smugler. In the same year, he acted in Adiyozhukkukal. For this film he won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. As a producer he co-founded Casino Films [b] and he produced the films AdiyozhukkukalKarimpin PoovinakkareGandhinagar Second Street and Nadodikkattu.[2] In 1986, he acted in Aavanazhi. It was followed by Inspector Balram 1991 and Balram Vs Tharadas. These all are directed by I. V. Sasi.[3]
